Good to see you old friend

Ran across this as I was searching for a old needed cad file on an old hard drive. A sort of homecoming. I missed this one.

This is a rendering for a home plan set that I created back when people actually were wanting these and building things.

Hey economy – lighten up already!

Temporary Performance Installation

This is an installation for a summer music series in NY  made of twisted rope.

Holding Pattern by Interboro Partners

Brooklyn studio Interboro Partners have won this year’s MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program competition to design a temporary installation in the courtyard of the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Centre in New York.

Holding Pattern by Interboro Partners

MoMA and P.S.1 are also partnering with the Zaha Hadid-designed MAXXI museum in Rome to create the first international edition of the Young Architects Program, with Italian studio stARTT chosen to create an event space in the museum’s piazza. More information to follow.

PVC is cool again.

Love this as an installation.

The B (h) uis is one of those projects that seems to magically transform humble waste materials into an elegant and useful architectural space. Made entirely of short lengths of PVC pipe Dutch based Hoogte Twee Architect Studio’s cube shaped pavilion makes for a sweet place to kick back. The PVC tubes are reimagined as a building block for the strutcure — sizes were carefully selected to balance function, strength and aesthetic and stacked into a uniquely functional whole.

Art studio – container style

This might be my favorite shipping container project so far. This really takes advantage of the properties of the container without being limited by them. The basement becomes a solution for the grade as well as a fantastic base to attach to. If my backyard looked like this, I’d love this little studio.

Wow! We knew that shipping containers could be used to build beautiful buildings, but this art studio by MB Architecture in Amagansett, New York is truly gorgeous. The artist had a limited budget of $60,000 to work with and wanted something close to home that was both functional as a working space, but would also be inviting and reflective. The exterior is kept very simply as the shipping container, but painted gray for a sophisticated look and a way to blend the container into the wooded environment. Inside, bright white walls act as a blank canvas for new artwork and ample daylighting streams in through the large windows on either end.

Energy Efficient PreFab: Huf House

From the Inhabitat blog, this is a great prefab system now being represented out of Cleveland, OH. I’m interested to see what the prices per square foot are, but the system really allows some beautiful spaces.

German company HUF HAUS is offering gorgeous green houses to the masses by bringing Bauhaus style to factory-made green homes. The company’s signature post-and-beam construction allows for big open spaces, and they serve them up with solar panels and even an optional geothermal heating system.

Underground Earth House

This is just beautiful, and worth linking to. I love the gesture to incorporate the felled trees into the retaining wall, and wanting those spots to decay naturally.

Korean architect Byoung Soo Cho has built an underground house outside Seoul. Called Earth House, it’s not as fancy as some iterations of the subterranean abode, drawing instead on Cho’s very unpretentious inspirations: Taoist minimalism and the utilitarianism of the silos, barns and sheds Cho has come to love as a professor atMontana State University. Arguably, the Korean House also reveals a love of big sky: the 23-foot square courtyard is really the crown jewel of the place, which consists of six tiny rooms built mainly of concrete andrecycled wood.

Haiti Rebuilding Efforts – AFH

Here is the work that HFH has been doing relating to the Haiti efforts, and here is the link if you would like to make a donation through the group’s main website - http://www.architectureforhumanity.org/

“Dear Chapters,

We’ve been, as you all know, most busy for the last week.  I wish to provide you with an update on the status of our collective efforts.  Please pass along this information to your chapter members and public.

1.  We’re hoping to hit the 100K donation mark by the end of the week.  The response, in donation and design services, has been phenomenal.  We wish to thank all of you for spreading the word – whatever you have done via web sites, Facebook, Twitter, etc. is working tremendously well.  It’s wonderful.

2.  In the event you have not seen it, here is Cameron’s latest update: http://www.architectureforhumanity.org/updates/2010-01-17-haiti-quake-a-plan-for-reconstruction

3. On the fund raising front, several things are in the works for our Austin, New York and Miami chapters.

  • Austin: This upcoming Wednesday, January 20 @ 7:30 at the Paramount theater, there will be a special showing of the film “One Piece at a Time”.  This film was produced by Turk Pipkin (http://nobelity.org/) and features Cameron and AfH projects with Nobelity.  Turk, with the amazing assistance of the AfH Austin chapter, is donating 100% of the evening’s proceeds to Architecture for Humanity Haiti Rebuilding Efforts.  You don’t have to be present – you may purchase a $10 ticket and support the cause!
  • New York and Miami: With the large Haitian communities in both cities, our New York and Miami chapters are organizing fund raising events.  We have tentative venues identified and the respective chapter members are hard at work on the details. I’ll provide an update when things are firmly in place.

4.  FOR ALL CHAPTERS: Turk Pipking is making his film available to all chapters for the purpose of fund raising events.  So everyone of you could hold a hold a screening of One Peace for the Architecture for Humanity Haiti Rebuilding fund.  This could range from home screening with 20 people to any size venue you can find – churches, community centers, local cinema, whatever. There is an online sign-up athttp://www.unityandpeace.org/ set up by the film’s distributor, Monterey Media.  The site is to reflect this sometime tomorrow so be on the lookout for it.

5.  Last we are looking to open up a design/rebuilding Architecture for Humanity studio in Haiti.  Chapter members would be invited to volunteer on site and provide design services.  Please note that this would be at the chapter’s cost (or member’s).  We will provide further details on this once we’ve identified the location and specific projects.

Thank you all again for all the hard work on our behalf.

urbanSHED – New competition

This is an interesting competition, and I’m going to try and squeeze this one in. From the Bustler blog:

“The urbanSHED International Design Competition challenges the global design community to re-think the current sidewalk shed standard and create a prototype worthy of today’s New York City.

We invite engineers, architects, designers and students from all related fields to compete. Competitors will generate innovative, compelling and environmentally friendly proposals to thoroughly re-imagine temporary sidewalk shed design while improving the pedestrian experience.

The New York City Buildings Department, American Institute of Architects New York Chapter, the Alliance for Downtown New York, the New York Building Congress, the Illuminating Engineering Society New York Chapter, and the ABNY Foundation (Association for a Better New York) with additional support from the Structural Engineers Association of New York, the New York City Department of Planning and the New York City Department of Transportation have partnered to create this open competition.

Design Challenge

urbanSHED International Design Competition challenges designers to conceptualize a cutting-edge sidewalk shed to protect pedestrians, improve the pedestrian experience– and make New York City even more attractive for generations to come.

More than 6,000 sidewalk sheds flank New York City’s buildings and construction sites. They span more than 1,000,000 linear feet and typically remain in place for nearly a year. While these sheds protect pedestrians from construction debris and support other construction structures, they undermine the beauty of New York City’s architecture.

We’re seeking a fresh, new sidewalk shed design that’s sustainable, economical, meets or exceeds current safety requirements and City regulations, improves technical and structural performance – and creates a better environment for the people who live in, work in and visit New York City.

Providing Shelter

Unemployment is rising quickly. The value of the dollar depreciates. Inflation is about to explode.

For most of us, these things are conceptual in nature. They might have an residual effect on our behaviors in some token way, but mostly our lives continue on unchanged. For a quickly growing part of the population, though, these things contribute to and reinforce a reality that most of us can’t begin to imagine.

Homelessness is guaranteed to be a growing problem in the coming years. The struggling economy creates a circular scenario where there are more people in need and less money available to help. If you’d like to make a difference, see one of these links below.

Locally, I have been involved in various fundraisers for this group in the last few years – http://www.lodestardrc.org/. They are an amazing organization, and gladly accept any size donation on their website.

If you have more time available than money, please send me an email. We are currently organizing a local Phoenix chapter of Architecture of Humanity (http://www.architectureforhumanity.org/), and need a large group of volunteers.
